Meet Councilman David Black

I’m a husband, father, public servant, small business employee, and proud Forest Acres resident. I’m asking for your vote again so that I may continue to represent this great city and keep moving Forest Acres in the right direction.

Deep Roots

I have a strong passion for our city, and this was taught to me at an early age. I am proud to be a third-generation Forest Acres resident and blessed to raise my family on the same street I grew up on. I learned to ride my bike on these streets, played baseball at the park, and practiced cross country on our hills. I grew up going to Forest Lake Presbyterian Church and graduated from A.C. Flora High School.

Public Servant

After graduating from The Citadel, I moved to Washington, D.C., and began what would become a 17-year public service career, working in both the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives.

From being a Boy Scout at Bethel United Methodist Church to Capitol Hill to City Hall, I have always looked for ways to give back to the community I live in. I have continued to work across all levels of government (federal, state, local) to grow and cultivate our relationships with elected officials and regulatory agencies.

Small Business Employee

I work for a small, locally owned turf management company, and we service many Forest Acres residents and businesses. I hold a certificate in Landscape and Horticulture from Midlands Technical College.

Husband & Father

I’ve been married for 21 years, and my wife, Dana (Mishoe), is also from Columbia. When we moved back to the area in 2016, there was no question as to where we wanted to live!

Dana and I have two middle school-aged boys. We’re involved in their school and help out with their sports teams and extracurricular activities. We’re members of First Presbyterian Church.

Councilman

I was elected to my first term on Forest Acres City Council in 2021. I have chaired the city’s Hospitality Tax Committee and am currently chairing the Public Safety Foundation. I was also appointed as Mayor Pro Tem in 2023.

In 2023 I was appointed to the South Carolina Building Codes Council by Gov. Henry McMaster as the sole municipal representative. In this capacity, I provide our city with a direct voice to safety proposals and regulations for commercial and residential properties.

BBQ & Baseball!

When I’m not working in my own yard or shuttling my boys to an activity, I enjoy watching college and professional sports, running, and BBQ. I’m a certified judge with the Kansas City Barbeque Society and travel to area competitions to judge pork, chicken, ribs, and brisket. It’s a rough gig, but somebody’s got to do it!

Our family loves baseball, and we have a goal to visit all of the Major League Baseball stadiums. So far, we have been to nine (and Cooperstown), with a few more planned for this summer.
